What is a large dog breed that is loyal, protective and smart?

I'm moving into a house of my own and would like some guard dogs, i already have a doberman pup and she is very friendly so i'd like another dog to keep her company when i go out, i'm thinking maybe a male Alsatian, any suggestions? I don't particularly like Rottweilers..
