Has anyone heard of a dog that uses her water to wash her new pup instead of drinking it?

Our Shar pei had a pup taken by c-section five days ago. She drank water the night she came home from the vet but now when she is offered water she laps it up with her tongue a lick or two at a time and washes the baby with it. She will drink milk with no problem. I wonder if she is just spoiled or if she isn't a bit neurotic. She has always been a very unique dog!
